National Development Council

Description:  National Development Council (NDC) will offer a full time, full summer internship for one student in 2009 for StreetSquash student in their New York City office.

As many of you know, we have had several students (Lonnie, Jenny R, Davian) who have interned in last two summers with NDC and they all have had great success in the program.  The NDC staff has always been a great supporter of StreetSquash, both financial and with other services, and the staff does a great job of making sure the interns are engaged in worthwhile, productive jobs throughout the summer.

That been said, National Development Council is a serious company that handles hundred of millions of dollars as they reinvest capital into low income areas, and they have very high standard for the interns.  They offer a very good wage for college students (averaging $15/hour) and offer support to interns sometimes even when their service is over, but they look for interns who are going to work hard full time and add to their office.

Deadline:  April 1st

Harlem Success Charter School

Description:  Harlem Success Academy(HSA) is one of StreetSquash’s partner schools for the Schools in Public Schools Gym Program.   They have four schools currently operating in Harlem and are hoping to open up to 40 more schools in the coming years.  Abby Johnson, one of our YLC members, is a current kindergarten teacher at HSA II and has helped contact their administration to coordinate possible internships.  Summer internships typically occur in one of the network departments:
•    Data and Accountability
•    Operations
•    Finance
•    Human Resources
•    Instructional Developments
•    External Affairs
•    Information, Communication, and Technology
Summer interns in these departments will handle a mix of administrative work and project based work.  While interns do not work with children directly, the internships provide a great chance to see the inner-workings of the schools.  There will both paid and unpaid positions, and positions are available for high school through college students.

I encourage anyone who has any interest in fashion, marketing, or just seeing a small business in action to look into this opportunity.  Adam said he would beinterested in getting feedback from potential interns, so if there is particular aspect or section of the company that interest you, please let me know.

Fresh Air Fund

Description: The FreshAir Fund is hiring counselor for their summer camps and will be hosting a job fair on Saturday March 28th from 1-5pm at their office at 633 3rd Ave. (between 40th and 41st Streets), 14th Floor.
For those who do not know about FreshAir, it’s a program that sponsors inner city children to spend time in the summer outside of the city, either at summer camps or with host families.  Several StreetSquash students have done their programs in the past and this year StreetSquash has an official partnership with the program, as we’re hoping to send at least 5 children to their various programs.

The programs has some very high profile donors (two camps are named after Mariah Caray and Tommy Hilfiger, if you care about that sort of thing) and it’s a very well known and respected program, so it’s definitely won’t hurt your resume if you’re interested in youth services or working with under-served populations.

I’ve pasted links about the job fair and their general positions below.  Obviously many of you will be at school and cannot attend the fair, but if you do have interest and cannot make it, let me know and I’ll find out who to call so you get more information.  For those interested in the job fair, you need to pre-register by faxing a resume to 212-681-0147 or emailing a resume to camping@freshair.org.

As always, let me know if you have any questions.  Have a good weekend.
