After-School

The After School Program is StreetSquash’s core offering, and serves public school children from Harlem and Newark in 6th-12th grade. Participants are recruited from StreetSquash’s partner schools, making up teams of 20-30 boys and girls by grade.

  • Harlem: 180 participants from 3 partner schools, 6th-12th grade.
  • Newark: 28 participants from 2 partner schools, 6th & 7th grade.

Students recruited in middle school are expected to commit to the program through college graduation, for up to 11 years. For the duration of the school year, After School Program students attend 4 weekly sessions: 2 After-School Sessions, 1 session of Literacy Enrichment/College Prep, and 1 Saturday Session.

  • After-School Sessions: minimum 75 minutes homework help and maximum 75 minutes of squash training.
  • Literacy Enrichment (Middle School): 75 minutes of subject-based learning, arts enrichment, & 75 minutes of squash training on Fridays.
  • Saturday Session: 75+ minutes squash training and match play. Saturdays are also time for team members to perform community service and take field trips.
  • Team Trips: weekend excursions to visit new communities, for squash and cultural exposure.
