Literacy Project
The StreetSquash Literacy Project is held on Friday afternoons for all 7th and 8th grade StreetSquashers. Geared towards improving basic academic skills, the Literacy Project engages students through a curriculum that encompasses reading, math, art, and science activities.
Through the Literacy Project, members have the opportunity to read a wide range of books and articles, visit sites around New York City, and contribute to both individual and group projects. In 2008-2009 the Literacy Project partnered with volunteers from Canteen to run interactive writing workshops with published authors. At the end of the year, some of the students’ work will be published in a literary magazine celebrating adolescent writers.
